- Congratulations to the New Horizons team for the fantastic unveiling of Pluto!
- Posted: 07/14/2015
- [New Horizons Link]
As we explore the cold, dusty reaches that stretch far beyond Neptune, there are likely to be many surprises--and Pluto has already proven to be a fascinating object. I still like to think of it as a planet, but that may be because of the legend of Clyde Tombaugh, some of whose ashes are now out there on the spacecraft. We met Mr. Tombaugh at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory during the Voyager missions in 1980, (photo of Mr. Tombaugh in Von Karman auditorium, credit Astrid Anderson) and the story of his close scrutiny of star plates at the Lowell observatory, of Percival Lowells suggestion that there might be another world out there, and Tombaugh;s subsequent discovery of a wandering star--the last planet!--sticks with me as one of the great science stories of our time. He was twenty-three at the time. So heres a look back, and a look ahead--to the Kuiper belt, the Oort cloud, dwarf planets, distant comets, and all the wonders of interstellar space!
(Discovery of Pluto set H.P. Lovecrafts imagination soaring, and he identified his fictional planet Yuggoth (in The Whisperer in Darkness) with this new outer world There, the Mi Go mine a mysterious mineral called Tokl, and avoid a hideous entity that sometimes rises out of a pit... none of which has yet been confirmed by New Horizons! Stanton A. Coblentz was the first writer to publish a story incorporating Pluto, and he was soon followed by Stanley G. Weinbaum, Edward E. Doc Smith, Robert A. Heinlein, Larry Niven, and Kim Stanley Robinson--among many others.) [Pluto In Fiction] - Noting Christopher Lee

- Way back in the 1960s, Bjo Trimble scoped me out as a possible illustrator for THE STAR TREK CONCORDANCE, the first fan encyclopedia based on the show. I was sixteen. She sent me an envelope filled with clippings from the cutting room floor at Desilu, a treasure trove of edits, in-betweens during set-ups, tests for special effects and actor lighting--to use as references for illustrations. I supplied a number of illos for the project--mostly spaceship and exterior scenes. Among my first publications!
[Continue Reading and See Photos] - Arthur Machen Collection At Risk
- Posted: 12/14/2014
- While libraries around the world face challenges, to be the holder of record for a collection of one of the most interesting writers of the 19th and 20th centuries--Arthur Machen--adds additional weight to the fate of Newport library services. Arthur Machen was a highly influential writer of fantasy and horror, a predecessor to H.P. Lovecraft, much beloved of writers and film-makers throughout the last century, and renowned to this day for his potent mix of Victorian criticism and extraordinary imagination. Many of our bestselling horror writers--including Stephen King and Peter Straub--owe him a debt of gratitude. As well, his translation of the Memoirs of Casanova is regarded as the finest available in English.
I can only hope this collection will remain in a good home, or, if the city council decides to rearrange its libraries, that the Machen collection will be donated to a local university or other facility capable of making the materials available for viewing and reading and scholarship.
Sincerely,
Greg Bear

Greg Bear - Dale F. "Ted" Bear 1925-2013
- Posted: 03/27/2013
- Beloved father, grandfather and partner Dale F. Bear passed away peacefully on February 21 in Rancho Bernardo at the age of 87. Born on a small farm in South Dakota, as a young man, he worked as a logger in Iowa, a private detective in Los Angeles, and enlisted in the Navy during WW 2, going on to serve twenty-three years as a meteorologist, a veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. His final shipboard assignment was on the USS Oriskany off Vietnam. He retired with the rank of Lt. Commander. His postings took him and his family to Japan, the Philippines, and Alaska, exposing all to cultures and sights not common for American kids in the 1950s and 60s. Predeceased by his wife Wilma and stepdaughter Barbara, he is survived by partner Dolores Fazekas, step-granddaughter Cathey Kelley and her son Erik, son Greg, and grandchildren Erik and Alexandra. He was an amazing and gentle man, a wandering soul now off on his next duty assignment. We will all miss him.

On September 28th, Edward Shaw finds an error in the geological records of Death Valley. A cinder cone was left off the map. Could it be new? Or, stranger yet, could it be artificial? The answer may be lying beside it--a dying Guest who brings devastating news for Edward and for Planet Earth."

[Order from Powell's]- Just back from the HALO 3 ODST blowout...
- Posted: 09/22/2009
Just back from the HALO 3 ODST blowout at the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle. A huge, energy-filled event! For the last year, I've been talking and meeting and emailing with many of the creative folks behind HALO's games, novels and upcoming videos--and as soon as I finish my new novel, around the first of the year, I'll embark on an odyssey of my own--creating the origin story for the entire HALO universe.
"The Forerunner Trilogy" will be published over a span of at least a year and a half, and will reveal for the first time, in depth, the enigmatic builders of the Arks, the Forerunners. The series is currently set to begin about a hundred thousand years B.P.E., and will involve human origins, the struggle to avert the first appearance of the Flood, and many other Big Events only lightly sketched out in the Halo games. HALO fans are devoted, detail-oriented, curious, and--I hope--patient! Getting this right will take some time, but it's likely to be great fun. Expect epic adventure, many surprises, and interlinks with MYSTERIOUS FUTURE PROJECTS... -- Greg Bear

- Forry Ackerman
- Posted: 12/05/2008
"Forrest J Ackerman was an old and dear friend, the first fan I met at a conventionand one of the most influential people in my life. My cousin Dan Garrett and I visited the Ackermansion on Glendower avenue in the mid 1960s, when I was fifteen or sixteenand that esteemed house/museum, filled with books and art and memorabilia, became the site of frequent visits with other friends, including David Clark and Phil Tippett. There, we met such luminaries as Ray Harryhausenwatched classic films like The Most Dangerous Game--and attended the famed Don Glut Intergalactic Film Festival. Forry traded books from his collection for my early artworkand helped me expand my collection of Olaf Stapledon, including a much-prized autographed copy of A Man Divided. In later years, wed meet at Comic-Con in San Diego, various conventions around the world, and at the 65th Anniversary of King Kong in Omaha, Nebraskawhere I shot two of these pictures, with friends Ray Bradbury, Ray Harryhausen, and Diana Harryhausen. In 2003, a group from the nascent Science Fiction Museum in Seattle visited Forry and told him one of his lifelong dreams was about to be fulfilled. It was my pleasure to show Forry around the museum when it was completed. Forry was a lifelong enthusiast, devoted to science fiction and films, and there will never be anyone like him again. Lift a glass of your favorite soft drink in toastroot beer will do fine. Heres to Forry and all of his friends and fans, world-wide and across the decades!" -- Greg Bear

- QUANTICO Available in Germany
- Posted: 11/29/2006
- QUANTICO is now available in Germany, and Heyne has done an exceptional job -- including creating a glossary of terms that might not be familiar to German readers. Rather in the tradition of DARWIN'S RADIO and DARWIN'S CHILDREN, but this glossary covers political, historical, espionage, and a few scientific words and phrases. Outstanding! Now -- since I don't read much German, I'm hoping my German readers will kindly send in any corrections that might be necessary. Thanks in advance! [Read more about QUANTICO]

- Updates: DARWIN'S CHILDREN and DARWIN'S RADIO
- Posted: 03/01/2006
- DARWIN'S RADIO and DARWIN'S CHILDREN have been released by the Sci Fi Channel and will not be developed by them for a cable miniseries. Executives had changed the tone and emphasis on these books substantially—rendering the New Children into vicious mutant aliens with elf ears, blue blood, and telekinetic powers, something of a mix of "Village of the Damned" and "It's Alive." Eventually, creative differences became insurmountable. Producers Michael DeLuca, Howard Braunstein, and Created By's Vince Gerardis are now free to take the properties to other networks, or develop them as a feature film.
